Isn't it Romantic?

Year: 1988
Album: All That Jazz

Not only are we not done playing 80s songs, I'm not done discovering 80s bands. Sometimes I wonder I what was doing that decade.
This is the sort of song and video that would have totally had me all whippsy dizzy back in the day.

We've discussed mommy's affection for pretty boys.

"How Can I Fall?"

Friday

The score is settled.

Year: 1980
Album: Bebe Le Strange

You really can't blame me for not knowing about this song until now. I was 10 at the time of it's release.

"Even It Up"

Sweet!

Year: 1980
Album: Bebe Le Strange

We really should've looked up the discography on this artist before we decided that they didn't make any other videos in the 80's.

"Sweet Darlin"

It's nice to have somebody on your side.

Year: 1983
Album: Passionworks

It's sad when a rock band can't find success without switching their musical style to adult contemporary, like this band did two years later.

I like this better than anything off of their hugely successful 1985 album.

"Allies"

It's easy. Just say "no."

Year: 1983
Album: Passionworks

We thought we capped off this artist over a year ago. Problem is, I didn't realize they released an album in '83. Until tonight.

"How Can I Refuse?"

Sunday

Does Clearasil come in green?

Year: 1987
Album: Constrictor

Yep, I'm over at HT90's playing Alice videos again and I found another one that belongs over on this site.

And I've also noticed that most of the Alice videos I've uploaded to Dailymotion have been deleted by those French bastards. You have no idea how much that pisses me off.

"Teenage Frankenstein"

Saturday

Any changes of making it into a circle?

Year: 1988
Album: Iron Eagle II OST

I've still got a smattering of 80's clips that haven't been uploaded, and I haven't been in any grand hurry to do so, but when I stumbled across an unseen video from my favorite rock icon I knew I had to play it immediately.

The quality is crap, and come to think of it the song ain't much to write home about either. But it's Alice. And that's more than enough for me.

"I've Got A Line On You"

Sunday

I can hear you now!

Year: 1987
Album: Love An Adventure

How long have I been waiting for a copy of this video to turn up on the web? Um, how long have we been in business? Exactly.

The original 1983 version of this song has been one of my 3 Hall of Fame clips. The fact that I've only had 3 Hall of Fame clips out of the over 3000 songs we've played should tell you something. But I've known all along that they re-made the song 4 years later for the album that brought them some U.S. chart success, and I knew that this was the 2nd single from that album. Didn't do as well as "Funkytown," but I've always liked it.

The difference between the 2? Less synth, (but still a lot of it) and more guitars. And as you can tell from the video footage, this one was used on the soundtrack for some random surfer movie that nobody remembers.

"Listening '87"

Friday

This is not Tom Petty.

Year: 1987
Album: A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

Auld Hat played a 90's video from this band in the coffeeshop today, which made me realize that they didn't get much attention over here in the nightclub. And so I came to verify that and it turns out that even the few videos we did play went missing, because the people at Dailymotion are not only still French bastards, but they are bigger French bastards than they were before.

Where was I? Oh yeah, this video is back now.

"Learning to Fly"

The Republicans are coming!

Year: 1980
Album: The Wall

Great classic performance clip of a great classic Floyd song. One of my favorites from this album.

"Run Like Hell"

I feel nothing.

Year: 1988
Album: The Delicate Sound of Thunder

This song from 1979's "The Wall" was re-released as a live single in '88 with accompanying video. So I get to play it here.

Wait a minute... The Wall came out in '79? We play videos from '79. This changes everything.

Or nothing. How would I know? I'm numb. But comfortably so.

"Comfortably Numb"

Thursday

Meow.

Year: 1981
Album: Cats OST

So here's what I think I know about this performance, and keep in mind that most of the things I know are wrong: Elaine Paige originated the role of Grizabella on Broadway in Cats, and reprised the role in later years when she wasn't on stage in Chess, Sunset Boulevard, Evita, and various other projects.

This particular performance might have been filmed in the 90's; I'm just not sure. But given that the Broadway album would have been recorded in the 80's, I think the song deserves inclusion here.

It also deserves inclusion because I've already played 2 other videos featuring Miss Paige this evening and I wanted something else to round out her collection with.

video
"Memory"

Which would explain why I don't like him very much...

Year: 1985
Album: Chess OST

I found this the same day I found the previous video, yet another video for a song I'd heard fifteen years earlier but never knew had it's own clip. Also didn't realize until just today that this was released as a single back in the UK in '85 and charted nicely.

I believe Barbara Streisand has since covered this as a duet, although I'm not sure at the moment who she sang it with. Not sure that I would care much either, as I'll always be partial to this original.

video
"I Know Him So Well"

Knight takes Queen.

Year: 1985
Album: Chess OST

Though released in the mid-80's, I did not hear this song until the early 90's when I finally purchased myself a copy of the Chess soundtrack, if only to add "One Night In Bankok" to my 80's music collection.

I absolutely did not expect to find over ten songs on the album that I would love more than "One Night In Bankok." This is not only one of those songs, it has since become one of my favoritest songs of all time, on account of how bitter it is.

I also did not know until just last week that there was a video for this song. And now I get to share it. Enjoy.

"Nobody's Side"

Sunday

Louis Dreyfuss?

Year: 1985
Album: 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)

I think another reason this album didn't do better is because Van Halen was already having massive success that same year with an album of the same name, which was also named after it's year of release. Did that sentence make any sense?

video
"Julia"

That's not a miracle. Here, turn this water into wine.

Year: 1986
Album: Revenge

While out looking at their Wiki discography, I noticed that there were only 2 years in the 80's when this duo did not release an album of new material. However, there were 2 other years in which they released 2 albums. I don't think anybody else pulled that off.

Eat that, Prince.

video
"Miracle Of Love"

For unlawful carnal knowledge...

Year: 1984
Album: 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)

Despite massive success with the their prior album (Sweet Dreams, anyone?) this album did not do well at all in the States. It served as a soundtrack for a movie of the same name from that year, which also must not have done well in the States as I never even knew about it.

video
"Sexcrime"

Don't forget to put a bow on top.

Year: 1982
Album: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)

Not the best quality on this live clip, hence my willingness to let it sit in the stockroom for oh these many months, but I knew I'd get around to it someday.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds covered this song in 1986 and got a hit with it. I'm not in the mood to hyperlink another video, but it's easily found in the sidebar. And while I've never been a fan of that particular band, I suppose I should give them some credit for having the brains to cover something from the likes of Annie and Dave. Or I could just hate them more for their inability to get a hit with their own material. Whatever.

video
"Wrap It Up"

Friday

It is, indeed.

Year: 1979
Album: At Budokan

Capping off this artist (to the best of my knowledge,) and putting them into double digits, here's one that I downloaded a long time ago and never got around to posting. I hope it was worth the wait.

video
"Ain't That A Shame"

Who, me?

Year: 1985
Album: Standing On The Edge

Well known song that I can't believe we haven't played yet. Although I'm surprised at the release year, because I would've thought it to be much sooner in the decade.

"Tonight It's You"
